Trump's Canada Trade War Enters Second Year Amid Tariff Escalation
President Donald Trump's trade war with Canada has been ongoing for nearly two years, with both countries imposing tariffs on each other's goods.
The conflict began in January 2025 when Trump announced his intention to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports. He later invoked a national emergency over undocumented immigration and drug trafficking to justify the tariffs, which were set to take effect on February 4, 2025.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded by promising retaliatory measures, including tariffs worth $29.8 billion Canadian dollars ($20.7 billion) on U.S. imports.
