Trump's Economic Boom Claim Falters Amid Inflation Concerns
President Donald Trump has been touting an economic boom for over two years now. However, his claims have come under scrutiny as the August jobs report revealed a surprise gain of 162,000 jobs, which he initially welcomed. Yet, instead of celebrating, he launched into a tirade against inflation and interest rates, blaming them on the financial markets, the Federal Reserve, and U.S. trade partners.
Trump disputed the commonly accepted notion that the strong job numbers could contribute to inflationary pressures, saying 'Success does not cause inflation. Stupidity causes inflation.' He also claimed it's 'crazy' that stock markets fell on Friday due to inflation concerns.
The president has been struggling to deliver stronger economic growth, with the economy growing at around 2% annually, slower than during the Biden administration. Trump blames higher interest rates for U.S. government debt, suggesting America could retaliate by stopping trade with foreign countries. However, this would likely worsen inflation and his political and economic headaches.
Trump's approval rating on the economy is at a low 32%, down from 50% in 2018 when Republicans faced midterm voters under Trump's leadership. His recent levying of tariffs against Canada has become a problem for Republicans in Senate races.
