Trump's Economic Boom Dreams Slammed by Inflation Fears
President Donald Trump has been touting an economic boom for nearly two years, but even a strong jobs report in August has brought him frustration rather than relief. The report showed a surprise gain of 162,000 jobs, which Trump initially welcomed as a positive sign. However, he soon turned his attention to inflation and interest rates, blaming the Federal Reserve for holding back economic growth.
Trump claimed that success does not cause inflation, but 'stupidity' does, in an Oval Office rant where he also criticized the stock market's decline due to inflation concerns. He argued that lower interest rates would lead to a boom in GDP, with growth rates of 12-15% if rates were lower.
The president's approval rating on the economy has been low, at 32%, according to recent polling. Trump officials argue that their policies are working as intended, citing the development of artificial intelligence and tariffs as drivers of productivity gains and economic growth.
However, economists caution that growth alone is unlikely to address budget deficits, which have risen due to increasing costs for Social Security and Medicare. The national debt has crossed $40 trillion, with rates on the 10-year US Treasury note reaching 4.79%.
