Trump's False Claim: U.S. Banks Free to Operate in Canada Despite Restrictions
U.S. President Donald Trump recently made a false claim that U.S. banks are not allowed to do business in Canada, citing the Bank of Canada as an example.
In reality, there are currently 15 U.S.-based banks operating out of Canada, either as branches or subsidiaries, with combined assets of approximately $124 billion (CAD).
J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, Citibank, and Wells Fargo are among the prominent U.S. banks doing business in Canada, offering a range of financial services including corporate lending, treasury services, credit cards, investment banking, and mortgage financing.
Experts note that while U.S. banks can operate in Canada, certain restrictions make it difficult for them to compete with incumbent Canadian banks, which have large assets and established customer relationships.
