Trump's Strike Cancellation Sends Gold Soaring Amid Eased Mideast Tensions
Gold prices surged nearly $40 higher on Monday's open as Middle East tensions eased sharply following US President Donald Trump's announcement to cancel plans for a new large-scale military strike against Iran. This move marked a significant turning point in the region, rapidly reducing market concerns over further escalation of geopolitical tensions.
The sudden shift came after Trump stated that he had agreed to cancel the planned strike, provided that a deal could be reached quickly to ensure the immediate, complete, and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and eliminate Iran's nuclear threat. Iran also signaled progress in negotiations with Oman on the joint management of the Strait.
Oil prices plummeted sharply at Monday's open, hitting their lowest level in four trading sessions, directly reducing upside inflation risks and easing the urgency for further Federal Reserve policy tightening. This created room for gold to move higher, as investors scaled back expectations for additional Federal Reserve rate hikes this year.
