Trump's Tariff Standoff with Canada Escalates Global Trade Uncertainty
US President Donald Trump's decision to impose 50% tariffs on various Canadian goods has escalated tensions between the two nations, raising concerns about a potential economic impact.
The move affects only 5.5% of Canada's exports to America, worth around $20 billion, but could raise the US effective tariff rate on Canadian exports to 6.9% from 5.1%, according to Oxford Economics.
Canada is the US's second-largest trading partner, with total trade between the two nations hitting $715 billion last year, and Canada also imported more US goods and services than any other country in 2022.
The dispute could lead to a protracted spat that inflicts heavy damage on Canada's economy, potentially triggering a recession, and US consumers and companies may also suffer from tariff costs, lost exports, or higher inflation.
