Trump's Tariff Threat Seen as Sign of Canada's Retaliatory Power

U.S. President Donald Trump's latest threat to impose 50% tariffs on hundreds of Canadian goods is seen as an indication that Canada's retaliatory trade actions are having a noticeable impact on the American economy, according to Ontario's representative in Washington.

David Paterson pointed out that U.S. auto exports to Canada dropped 22% since April last year, which he attributes to Canada's retaliation. He believes this shift in trade is being 'noticed' by the Trump administration and could be a starting point for productive trade talks.

Paterson noted that while Canada still has retaliatory tariffs on U.S. cars, auto parts, steel, and aluminum, despite lifting other levies last summer, the Trump administration is taking notice of the effect.

The 50% tariff threat was announced by Trump after he pointed to provincial bans on U.S. booze as a reason for the promised levies, which are set to come into force on August 19. The ban has reportedly been 'devastating' to U.S. spirit makers, while American wine sales in Canada plummeted $343 million US in 2025.

Paterson said that the current trade talks between Canada and the U.S. have picked up pace since his meeting with Canadian Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Wednesday.
