Trump's Tariff Tussle with Canada Sparks Widespread Criticism

US President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods has sparked criticism from both the left and right in opinion pieces. The Wall Street Journal, a conservative publication, labeled the move 'the dumbest trade war in history,' calling it unnecessary and self-defeating.

The editorial pointed out that US automakers, distillers, and manufacturers largely oppose the tariffs, which could lead to higher prices for consumers. The Journal also noted that Trump's team had loaded the talks with grievances on dairy, alcohol, tech, and digital taxes that could have been handled inside the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement framework.

In contrast, Paul Krugman, a columnist for The New York Times, argued in a Substack piece that the US economy is 'far more dependent on Canadian goods than most Americans realize.' He cited examples such as lumber, crude oil, and electricity in the Northeast. Krugman predicted that Trump will 'lose his trade war with Canada as thoroughly as he has lost his shooting war with Iran.'

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed dollar-for-dollar retaliation against the tariffs, which are as high as 50% on certain goods.
