Trump's Tariffs Shift Quebec's Focus From Independence
A factory near Montreal in the province of Quebec lost nearly a third of its orders for bolts and fasteners after US President Donald Trump imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian steel in June 2025. The company, Heico Companies, laid off over 140 employees, mostly in Quebec, and halted hiring after losing business to the US.
The economic losses due to the trade war have reshaped Quebec's political choices, with a decline in support for independence from Canada. According to polls, about 30% of residents now back separation, down from its highest level in a decade.
Quebec residents are increasingly concerned about the consequences of US policy on their province's economy and culture. Many now view unity with Canada as providing better protection for their interests, including the French language and culture. Even some supporters of independence agree that a separate Quebec would face significant economic challenges.
