Trump's Tariffs Threaten Maine Economy Amid Escalating Trade War with Canada
Maine Governor Janet Mills is warning that President Trump's trade war with Canada will have significant consequences for the state's economy. The governor, who shared a cup of coffee at Tim Hortons in Caribou with legendary jockey Ron Turcotte last summer, pointed out that many people living along the Maine-Canadian border have deep connections to both countries.
The President's tariffs have driven up costs for everything from groceries to cars and trucks, affecting Maine businesses and families. In the Saint John Valley, 90% of municipal road salt comes from Canada, and a major Canadian distributor has announced that it will halt deliveries due to the new tariffs.
This is not an abstract issue - a snowstorm could threaten public safety in late September or early October. Additionally, a developer's plans to create 125 jobs in Jay by turning a paper mill into an oriented strand board manufacturing facility were scrapped because of Trump's tariffs on equipment from Europe.
