Trump's Trade Rhetoric vs. Reality: US Relies Heavily on Canadian Energy

US President Donald Trump recently stated that the US does not need Canada. However, an examination of trade data reveals a starkly different reality.

The US imports approximately 4 million barrels of Canadian crude oil daily, which accounts for nearly 20% of total US petroleum consumption. This energy dependence is further underscored by the fact that much of Canada's heavy crude flows to Midwest refineries built to process it into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.

Energy also explains a significant portion of the US trade deficit with Canada, which Trump frequently cites as evidence of an unfair relationship. In reality, energy purchases help power the US economy, and Canadian heavy crude typically trades at a discount to US benchmark oil.

The US imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods in response to stalled trade talks, but these measures cover only around 5% of Canadian exports to the US and exclude energy. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith opposes restricting energy exports, arguing that it would harm her province, while former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney suggests that Canada should not rule out export taxes on oil, fuel, or potash if Trump escalates further.
