TSMC Offers US Dollar Dividends to Foreign Shareholders
TSMC, Taiwan's chipmaker giant, has taken a significant step towards making its dividend payments more convenient for foreign investors. As of Tuesday, TSMC announced that it will offer US dollar dividends to foreign shareholders registered under Taiwan's overseas-investor regulations.
The new option applies to the distribution of TSMC's second-quarter dividend, which is set at NT$7 per share. This translates to a total payout of about NT$181.5 billion (US$5.6 billion), making it a substantial sum for foreign investors who hold a 69.16% stake in the company.
Central Bank Foreign Exchange Department Director Tsai Chiung-min believes that TSMC's move could play an important role in introducing US-dollar dividend payments in the country, making local stocks more attractive to foreign investors and further opening up the domestic capital market to international investors.
