TSX Composite Plummets Over 300 Points Amid Sector-Wide Decline
Canada's main stock index, the S&P/TSX composite, took a hit on August 18, 2026, plummeting over 300 points in late-morning trading. This significant drop was largely attributed to losses in the base metal, technology, and financial sectors.
The real-time TSX market updates showed that the index had dropped by 304.92 points, bringing its value down to 36,363.00. In comparison, U.S. stock markets also saw a decline, with the Dow Jones industrial average falling 137.41 points at 53,322.37.
The S&P/TSX composite's decline was mirrored in other major indices, including the Nasdaq composite, which dropped by 340.47 points at 26,304.44. The Canadian dollar also took a slight hit, trading for 71.99 cents US compared to 72.12 cents US on Monday.
The energy and precious metals sectors were also affected, with the October crude oil contract rising 45 cents US to $84.19 per barrel, while the December gold contract fell by $50.90 at $4,422.80 an ounce.
