Turkish Lira Plunges to Record Low Against USD
The Turkish lira has hit a record low against the US dollar, with the exchange rate breaking above 48 for the first time. The USD/TRY pair reached 48.1685 on Thursday before retreating modestly and then resuming its advance to push above the 48-lira threshold.
Despite interest rates remaining at elevated levels, the lira's continued weakness is a concern for investors. The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye has maintained its policy rate at 37%, while the overnight lending rate remains at 40%. However, high domestic inflation and fiscal uncertainty are weighing on the currency.
Turkey's inflation challenge remains one of the biggest obstacles to stabilizing the currency. Annual inflation rose to 31.75% on August 3, while monthly inflation reached 1.78%. Persistent price growth continues to erode the purchasing power of the lira and limits the effectiveness of high interest rates in delivering a rapid improvement in the exchange rate.
