Turkish Lira Surges Past Six-Week High Against US Dollar

The Turkish lira has reached a six-week high against the US dollar after hints from the Federal Reserve indicated potential rate hikes as soon as March.

The USD/TRY exchange rate dipped to 3.5756 points, its lowest level since January 4, when it began its move towards a historic high of 3.9423 on January 11.

This appreciation comes despite the Fed minutes showing that 'it might be appropriate to raise the federal funds rate again fairly soon' if labor market and inflation figures were 'in line with or stronger than their current expectations.'

Analysts believe the rising risk appetite in global markets, combined with monetary tightening by the Central Bank of Turkey, is supporting the Turkish lira against other currencies.
