U.S.-Imposed Tariffs Haunt Canada's Economy for Decades

A century-old trend in U.S.-Canada trade relations is being revisited as Canada battles economic attacks from the United States. Historically, high-tariff Republican presidents have imposed tariffs on Canadian goods, crippling industries such as leather manufacturing and lumber production.

Muskoka's economy was severely impacted by these tariffs, particularly during the 1920s when three successive Republican presidents imposed emergency tariffs that eliminated profit margins for tanneries. The closure of Bracebridge's Beardmore Tannery led to widespread unemployment in the region.

A local businessman, Charles Shaw, managed to keep his Anglo-Canadian tanneries running by pivoting to non-American markets and passing on higher costs to U.S. consumers. However, even this strategy was not enough to withstand another tariff hike in 1930, which led to the closure of the remaining U.S.-oriented leather trade.

The Muskoka lumber and leather economy's struggles serve as a microcosm for the devastating impact of American protectionism on Canada's economy. The evisceration of regional supply chains and industries led to deeper economic stagnation in both countries.
