UAE Stocks Edge Up Ahead of US Inflation Report
UAE stocks edged up at the end of the week as investors waited for the US August inflation update. Dubai stocks rose by 0.63% while Abu Dhabi barely moved, despite oil prices staying above $100 a barrel.
The market was in wait-and-see mode ahead of the US consumer price index report, which is expected to show a 0.4% month-on-month increase and 3.4% year-on-year rise in inflation. A Dutch bank, ING, warned that even a small surprise in inflation could push markets to raise interest rates.
The UAE dirham's dollar peg means that local policy rates and short-term funding costs tend to follow the Federal Reserve's decisions. If US inflation comes in hotter than expected, it could lead to higher odds of a Fed hike and higher US short-term rates, which would tighten local liquidity and raise borrowing costs for companies and households.
This has significant implications for stocks, as higher rates can lift the 'discount rate' investors use to value future earnings, weighing particularly on rate-sensitive sectors even if oil prices are supportive.
