UBS Buyback Plan Boosts Swiss Stocks Amid Fed Uncertainty
Swiss stocks declined by 0.58% as investors digested corporate updates and awaited the US Federal Reserve's interest rate decision. The Swiss Market Index was impacted by a mix of company news and uncertainty surrounding the Fed's actions, with Deutsche Bank Research estimating a 32% chance of a hike as of last night.
Despite the market uncertainty, UBS, one of Switzerland's largest banks, reported better-than-expected results for the first half of 2026. The bank's net profit rose to $5.84 billion from $4.09 billion, while revenue increased to $27.94 billion from $24.67 billion.
UBS also announced a new $3 billion share buyback program that will run until at least the end of the second quarter of 2027. RBC Capital Markets noted that the planned repurchase pace looks slower than market consensus, but the long window gives management flexibility to adjust as needed.
