UBS Predicts Sterling Strength on Yield Advantage
The British pound is expected to strengthen further against major currencies due to its persistent yield advantage, according to UBS's latest research note.
UBS analysts attribute this strength to the UK's relatively high benchmark interest rate compared to the eurozone and the US. The bank's strategists see the higher interest rates making British assets more attractive to yield-seeking investors.
The pound has shown resilience in recent market trends, despite broader global economic uncertainties. As of the latest data, the Bank of England's base rate stands at 5.25%, significantly above the European Central Bank's deposit rate and the Federal Reserve's target range.
However, analysts caution that the yield advantage could narrow if the BoE signals earlier rate cuts than markets currently price in. This would make UK assets less attractive to investors and potentially weaken the pound.
