UBS Treads Regulatory Uncertainty as Tech Stake Grows
The Swiss banking giant UBS is navigating regulatory uncertainty while building its stake in German tech. The bank's shares have recently touched an all-time high, but their future valuation remains uncertain due to ongoing debates on revised banking regulations.
Under the current proposal by the Federal Council, UBS would need to fully back its stakes in foreign subsidiaries with common equity tier 1 capital, which could create a $9 billion shortfall. However, if parliament endorses these figures or eases them further through industry lobbying, the bank's core capital ratio could rise to 15.5%, bringing it on par with international peers.
The Swiss National Bank has signaled that UBS won't face a structural competitive disadvantage, removing one key overhang that had weighed on the stock. Technical indicators also support the case for further gains, with the relative strength index sitting at 53.6 and analysts targeting €52.20, implying roughly 15% upside from current levels.
However, external studies estimate annual financing costs between $640 million and $1.3 billion, which UBS has disputed. If parliament takes a harder line than expected, the bank's capital path could be reassessed, and investors may face a shift in their expectations.
