Ueda Skips Fed's Jackson Hole Symposium Amid Rate Hike Pressure
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda has decided not to attend the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole economic policy symposium, according to reports by Kyodo News and the Nikkei. Instead, board member Naoki Tamura will represent the BOJ at the event in western Wyoming from August 27th to 29th.
The decision was made due to a 'comprehensive consideration of scheduling', not health reasons. Ueda is scheduled to attend the Group of 20 (G20) Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, from August 31st to September 1st.
The Jackson Hole Symposium has drawn attention as Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh is set to deliver his keynote address. Ueda's absence comes amid pressure from the US government on Japan to raise interest rates, particularly after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged him to do so.
