UK Bond Yields Surge Amid Escalating US-Iran Tensions
UK government bond yields have seen a significant rise across the board, with both short-term and long-term yields increasing simultaneously. The market is reassessing the possibility of geopolitical risk affecting inflation.
Brent crude futures rose by about 2.5% in early trading to above $89 per barrel, as tensions between the US and Iran escalated further.
The UK gilt yield curve has shifted almost in parallel, with the spread between the two-year and ten-year yields remaining stable. The two-year yield increased by around 5 basis points to 4.39%, while the ten-year yield climbed to 5.04%, nearing a key psychological threshold.
Investors are re-evaluating the duration of the Bank of England's hawkish stance, with previous concerns about economic slowdown temporarily giving way to vigilance over imported inflation.
