UK Central Bank Seeks Stablecoin Support Amid Digital Finance Push
The UK government is pushing for its central bank to support innovation in digital assets, particularly stablecoins. Stablecoins are designed to avoid extreme price swings by being pegged to traditional currencies, making them suitable for everyday payments and international money transfers.
Currently, the Bank of England's primary responsibility is financial stability, ensuring that payment systems are safe and reliable. The UK government now wants to add a secondary objective: supporting innovation in payments, especially with new digital assets emerging.
The proposal will be introduced through amendments to the Financial Services and Markets Bill, which is set for debate in September 2026. If passed, the Bank of England would have to report annually on its efforts to advance innovation in payments and digital money.
