UK Debt Pile Hits £2.9 Trillion, Challenging Future Generations
Britain's economy is facing significant challenges, warned Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England. The UK debt pile stands at £2.9 trillion and if left unchecked, it risks saddling future generations with a growing burden.
The Prime Minister was urged to implement tax hikes and spending cuts worth around £40 billion to tackle the issue. Without action, the country will 'inherit the mortgage without the house,' said a report from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR).
The bond market turbulence has made it harder for the Chancellor to meet fiscal rules, threatening a multi-billion-pound hole in his 'headroom.' The NIESR report argued that Britain must target a primary surplus, which would imply significant tax hikes and spending cuts.
