UK Economy Beats Expectations, But Interest Rate Uncertainty Lingers
The UK economy saw stronger-than-expected growth in July, adding to uncertainty over interest rates. The Office for National Statistics reported that GDP grew by 0.4% in July, beating economists' expectations of no growth. This marks a strong start to the third quarter.
Services sector growth was particularly robust, expanding by 0.6%, while production and construction contracted by 0.5%. The economy's resilience during the first half of the year has continued into the second, according to the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR).
NIESR associate economist Fergus Jimenez-England warned that risks remain, particularly in terms of global volatility affecting business confidence. He cautioned that households and businesses will be looking for government support as rising energy prices squeeze incomes and margins.
