UK Economy Defies Expectations with 0.4% Growth in July

The UK economy defied expectations in July, posting a 0.4% month-on-month growth against forecasts of zero growth.

The growth was driven by services (0.4%), production (0.2%), and construction (0.1%) sectors, with admin services and computer programming and consulting contributing significantly to the services sector's performance.

The statistics office noted that many businesses in the latter sector are involved in activities related to artificial intelligence and cloud computing, which may have outweighed the economic fallout from the Iran war.

However, despite this positive news, the economy still faces several headwinds, including potential fiscal tightening in PM Andy Burnham's first Budget in October, higher taxes, and frozen tax thresholds that could limit household spending power.
