UK Economy Defies Expectations with Surprise July Growth
The UK economy has surprised experts by showing growth in July, defying expectations of zero growth. This is the second month in a row that the economy has performed better than expected.
According to ING, roughly half of June's rise in output was due to the IT sector, which makes up only 7% of total economic activity. The sector's strong performance may be attributed to the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres.
However, experts at ING caution that the GDP figures may be overstating the true pace of economic growth. They also note a well-worn trend in UK GDP figures, which tend to perform better in the first half of the year than the second.
The Bank of England remains focused on inflation and has expressed skepticism about the UK's growth figures. With energy prices rising, particularly for natural gas, the bank is unlikely to hike interest rates anytime soon.
