UK Economy Faces Constrained Backdrop, Threatening Bank of England Policy Risks
Societe Generale has issued a warning about the constrained economic backdrop in the UK, which is making it difficult for the Bank of England (BoE) to navigate its policy decisions. The French investment bank points out that the economy is experiencing sluggish growth, with GDP expanding by just 0.1% in the three months to November 2024.
Inflation remains above target at 2.5%, driven by rising service costs and wage growth. According to Societe Generale's analysis, the BoE faces a delicate balancing act as it tries to balance its desire to ease monetary policy with the need to avoid reigniting inflationary pressures.
The bank's analysts note that persistent wage growth and services inflation are key risks for the BoE, which could undermine credibility if rate cuts are made too soon. As of February 2025, the BoE's base rate stands at 4.5%, following a period of gradual reductions from the peak of 5.25% in 2024.
