UK Economy Gains Momentum Amid Services Sector Growth
The UK economy showed signs of recovery in August, driven by growth in the services sector. According to a recent survey, the S&P Global flash UK PMI composite output index rose to 52.5 from 52.2 in July, exceeding the 50 mark that separates contraction from expansion for the second consecutive month.
The services PMI business activity index reached a six-month high of 52.8 in August, up from 52.1 in July. Meanwhile, the flash UK manufacturing output index dipped to a five-month low of 51.2 this month from 52.9 in July.
Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, attributed the economic growth to 'sunny weather and tech investment'. He also noted that businesses are feeling more upbeat than ever since the war began, but cautioned that cost pressures remain high due to energy prices and supply disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict.
Jake Finney, senior economist at PwC, echoed Williamson's sentiment, saying that 'the economy is finding firmer footing' and pointing to reasonably strong growth in Q3. However, he also warned of potential risks from international volatility and inflationary pressure.
