UK Economy Posts Surprise Growth in August Amid Middle East Conflict
The UK economy picked up pace in August, according to recent data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. The flash services PMI rose to 52.8, exceeding expectations of 51.8. This growth is attributed to favorable weather conditions and increased tech investment.
However, the manufacturing sector showed some softening of growth due to decreased precautionary stock building. This easing concern is linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict. Businesses are feeling more optimistic than at any time since the war began, with job losses moderating.
Despite this positive trend, cost pressures remain high, driven by energy prices and supply disruptions related to the conflict. Chris Williamson, Chief Business Economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, warned that these concerns will continue to impact economic growth.
The Bank of England is likely to maintain a hawkish stance but may hold off rate hikes until the growth and inflation trajectories become clearer.
