The UK economy experienced a surprise boost in June, growing by 0.3% as companies benefited from a respite from the Iran war's energy price surge, the World Cup, and hot weather.

According to official data released on Thursday, this growth puts Britain on track for the strongest expansion among the Group of Seven rich economies in the first half of 2026.

Economists had forecast zero growth in month-on-month terms, but Thomas Pugh, chief economist at RSM UK, noted that the economy has 'weathered the Iran war extremely well' with little sign of consumers or businesses curtailing activity due to higher oil prices.

However, looking ahead, growth is likely to slow, as predicted by Andrew Hunter, senior economist at Moody's Analytics, who noted that there is a repeated pattern of strong growth in the first half of the year being followed by a sharp slowdown in the second.
