UK Economy Sees Resilient Growth Amid AI Boom
The UK economy is undergoing significant changes due to the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI). The country's economic growth data shows that AI is becoming a major contributor to the expansion, particularly in the information and communications sector. This sector accounted for almost half of the 0.4% GDP growth in the second quarter of 2026.
The information and communications sector saw a 3.7% increase in computer programming, consultancy, and related activities, which are increasingly intertwined with AI. This suggests that something more significant than a temporary technology-sector upswing is taking place: AI is beginning to reshape the UK economy through investment before its full productivity benefits have even arrived.
The growth in business investment is also notable, with £22.1 billion spent on plant and machinery in the second quarter. The increase was particularly significant for information and communications technology equipment, including computer hardware.
