UK Economy Shows Resilience Amid Global Challenges
The UK economy is showing signs of resilience in the face of global challenges. According to economists, the country's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to have increased by 0.4% for the second quarter, between April and June. This would mark another quarter of growth, following a 0.6% rise in GDP for the first three months of 2026.
The services sector, which accounts for the majority of the UK economy, has strengthened in May due to professional services and scientific research and development. Additionally, factories and manufacturing firms have been stockpiling goods in anticipation of supply shortages and price rises, helping to maintain growth.
However, economists warn that a weaker picture may be emerging from June, as heatwaves bring mixed results for businesses and some industries come under increasing pressure. Rob Wood, chief UK economist for Pantheon Macroeconomics, expects monthly GDP to dip by 0.1% in June, while Thomas Pugh, chief economist for RSM UK, forecasts a 0.1% rise.
