UK Economy Surges on AI-Driven Growth
The UK economy grew at its fastest pace in 18 months in July, driven by activity in the technology sector and artificial intelligence (AI) adoption. The Office for National Statistics reported that gross domestic product increased by 1.6% year-over-year, exceeding economists' forecast of 1.2%. This marked the fastest annual growth since February 2025.
The services sector contributed the largest share to growth in July, with computer programming activity being a significant driver. Some companies also experienced additional activity due to the men's football World Cup and unusually hot weather. James Smith, an advanced economies economist at ING, noted that the UK economy's performance had been better than expected despite the impact of the US-Iran war.
Economic growth in the three months leading up to July reached 0.4%, higher than previously forecasted. AI adoption played a crucial role in this growth, with companies engaged in computer programming benefiting from increased use of artificial intelligence. However, some economists warn that part of the strengthening may have been influenced by seasonal factors.
