UK Economy Surges on AI-Driven Growth Amid Global Uncertainty
Britain's economy showed unexpected growth in July, driven by advancements in artificial intelligence. The Office for National Statistics reported a 0.4 percent increase in gross domestic product (GDP) for the month, surpassing analyst forecasts of zero growth.
The services sector was a significant contributor to this growth, with computer programming being the largest contributor. This is consistent with strong growth seen throughout the year, particularly in AI-related activities. The data also showed that the value of UK imports and exports rose in July.
UK Finance Minister John Healey expressed confidence in the economy's resilience despite global uncertainty, citing the Middle East conflict as a concern for rising inflationary pressures worldwide. However, Paul Dales from Capital Economics warned that energy and borrowing costs may soon start to drag on real GDP, even with support from AI-related activities.
The Bank of England is expected to hold its benchmark interest rate at 3.75 percent next week, contrasting with the European Central Bank's recent decision to raise borrowing costs in the euro-zone.
