UK Economy Surges on AI-Fueled Growth
The UK economy grew at its fastest annual pace in 18 months in July, driven by artificial intelligence and strong services sector growth.
The Office for National Statistics reported that British gross domestic product (GDP) was 1.6% higher than a year earlier, exceeding economists' forecasts of 1.2%. The economy also grew 0.4% on the month in July, beating expectations of no change.
Services sector growth, particularly in computer programming, contributed significantly to the expansion. Director of Economic Statistics Liz McKeown noted that AI benefits were a major factor in recent growth, and hot weather and the World Cup also provided an extra boost.
Economists had mixed views on whether this outperformance would continue, with some predicting slower growth ahead. The Bank of England expects inflation to rise to 3.2% later this year due to increased oil prices.
