UK Economy Surges on AI-Powered Growth in July
The UK economy has reported an unexpected growth in July, driven by the artificial intelligence sector. According to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), Gross Domestic Product expanded 0.4 percent in the month, surpassing June's growth of 0.3 percent.
This news comes as a surprise, with analysts predicting zero growth for July. However, the ONS notes that ongoing strength in the services sector was partially offset by declines in production and construction over the three months to the end of July.
Liz McKeown, director of economic statistics at the ONS, attributed the growth to computer programming, which saw significant contributions from businesses involved with AI and related technologies. This trend continues throughout the year, with evidence pointing to a boost in the sector.
