UK Economy Surprises with Strong Growth Ahead of Burnham's First Budget
The UK economy has shown surprising signs of strength ahead of new Prime Minister Andy Burnham's first budget in October. A closely watched business survey revealed that the services sector, which drives the country's economic engine, recorded its best growth in six months.
This growth is attributed to strong investment in tech equipment and industries associated with the AI boom. The S&P Global Purchasing Managers' Index for the services sector rose to a six-month high of 52.8, beating all forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists.
The Confederation of British Industry's gauge of monthly manufacturing order books also reached its highest level since November 2024, bolstered by the strongest export orders in four years.
Consumer confidence has also improved, with market research firm GfK reporting its consumer confidence index rose to -14 in August from -17 in July. Retail sales volumes excluding automotive fuels dropped 0.9% in July, but were still 4% higher than a year previously, the strongest growth on this measure in five years.
