UK Energy Bills Drive Highest Inflation Rate in Four Months
The UK's inflation rate has risen to its highest level in four months due to higher energy bills. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that gas prices surged at their sharpest pace in almost four years, leading to a 13% increase in the cap on household energy bills.
This added £221 to the typical annual bill, with forecasted further price hikes on the horizon. Cornwall Insight predicts a 4% rise in energy bills from October, which would take them to their highest level since July 2023.
The ongoing US-Israel war with Iran has restricted global oil supplies, contributing to the increase in energy costs. The heatwave across Europe is also exacerbating the issue by increasing gas demand for power generation and air conditioning.
