UK Energy Bills Soar, Threatening Fresh Inflation Surge and Cost-of-Living Crisis
The UK's cost of living crisis is back in the spotlight as soaring energy bills threaten to drive up inflation and put further strain on household budgets. Following Ofgem's decision to lift the energy price cap by 13% for the summer quarter, gas and electricity costs have jumped significantly.
Economists forecast that the sharp increase in household energy bills will push the UK's Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation rate up toward 2.9%, reversing previous downward trends. This would put further pressure on households already struggling with financial constraints.
The Bank of England is considering raising interest rates from as early as September in response to fears over stubbornly high inflation becoming entrenched in the economy. With inflation surging back up, the Bank faces mounting pressure to keep interest rates elevated or potentially raise them further to prevent persistent price growth from becoming entrenched.
