UK Energy Costs Surge, Fueling Fears of Higher Inflation
The UK is facing renewed pressure from energy costs as inflation figures are expected to show a marked rise in July. The increase follows a 13% rise in Ofgem's household gas and electricity price cap, adding directly to domestic bills.
The rise in prices has been influenced by the conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted global energy markets. Higher oil and gas prices, shipping route disruptions, and weak European gas storage levels have added uncertainty for households, businesses, and the Bank of England.
Economists expect the consumer prices index to rise from 2.6% in June to about 2.9% in July, with Thomas Pugh stating that the increase in the Ofgem price cap would add around 0.44 percentage points to headline inflation.
