UK Food Inflation Soars as Global Conflicts and Extreme Weather Take Toll
The UK's Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has forecast that food inflation in the country will rise to nearly 4% by year-end and exceed 6% by mid-2027. The prolonged impact of the US-Iran war, drought in Europe, and the El Niño phenomenon are behind this outlook.
The FDF notes that while the year-on-year rate of increase in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices is expected to reach 3.9% in December this year, price increases will continue thereafter, peaking at 6.4% in July 2027. This represents a significant downward revision from the previous forecast of just under 10%, but FDF Chief Executive Karen Betts warns that 'this cannot continue indefinitely.'
Betts attributes the continued food price increases to persistently high energy, logistics, and packaging costs, compounded by this summer's extreme heat. The federation forecasts that food inflation will remain well above historical averages through the second half of 2027.
