UK Food Inflation Soars to Near 4% Ahead of Christmas
Food inflation in the UK is set to soar to nearly 4% by Christmas, according to the Food and Drink Federation (FDF). This means that Brits can expect their grocery shop prices to rise by around 4% compared to last year.
The FDF blames rising energy costs, climate-related events, and regulatory costs for packaging and recycling as the main drivers of inflation. The cost of wheat has increased by 45%, cocoa by over 100%, rice by 60%, sugar by 27%, and coffee by 22%.
Manufacturers are facing higher costs for fruit, vegetables, and grains due to droughts across the UK and Europe this summer. FDF chief executive Karen Betts said that food prices will rise this year and continue into 2027, with a predicted peak of 6.4% in July next year.
