UK Food Price Inflation Heads for 6.4% Peak in 2027
The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) has released a warning that UK food price inflation is likely to climb above 6% by mid-2027. According to the FDF, British food prices are expected to rise nearly 4% by the end of this year due to ongoing global issues such as the U.S.-Iran war, drought in Europe, and the El Niño weather pattern.
The industry body's forecast comes after Office for National Statistics data showed that food and drink inflation fell to its lowest point since August 2024 in July. However, the FDF stated that persistently higher costs of energy, logistics, and packaging will continue to drive up prices, with a peak of 6.4% predicted in July 2027.
The Bank of England views food and energy prices as playing a significant role in determining households' perceptions of inflation. The BoE forecasts that food price inflation will reach 3.5% by December, while overall consumer price inflation is expected to rise to 2.9%.
