The UK's food price inflation is set to rise to nearly 4% by year-end, according to the Food and Drink Federation. The industry body forecast a 3.9% increase in prices for food and non-alcoholic drinks in December compared to the previous year.

This marks a sharp reduction from its previous prediction of nearly 10% inflation, but the FDF warned that prices will continue to rise after this peak, reaching 6.4% in July 2027.

The main drivers behind the expected price hike are the ongoing impact of the US-Iran war, drought in Europe, and the El Niño weather pattern.

FDF Chief Executive Karen Betts said that food manufacturers have managed to keep prices low despite energy shocks, but can no longer do so indefinitely. 'Persistently higher costs of energy, logistics, and packaging, compounded by this summer's extreme heat, mean that food prices will rise this year, and we believe that rise will be sustained into 2027,' she added.

The Bank of England views food and energy prices as playing a bigger role in determining households' perceptions of inflation than other categories of goods and services. The BoE forecasts that food price inflation will reach 3.5% by December, while overall consumer price inflation rose to 2.9% in July.

The FDF called on the government to pause plans to restrict the marketing of unhealthy foods and highlighted the added £2 billion in costs due to higher payroll taxes and tighter advertising and packaging rules.
