UK Food Price Inflation Set to Surge Above 6% by 2027
Food price inflation in the UK is expected to rise above 6% by mid-2027, according to the Food and Drink Federation (FDF). This forecast comes despite a slight decrease in predicted inflation from nearly 10% to 3.9% by the end of this year. The FDF attributes these ongoing price increases to various factors, including the US-Iran war, droughts in Europe, and the El Niño weather pattern.
The FDF's Chief Executive Karen Betts stated that food manufacturers have kept prices as low as possible during the recent energy shock, but this cannot be sustained indefinitely. She emphasized that persistently higher costs of energy, logistics, and packaging, compounded by extreme heat this summer, will lead to sustained price rises.
The FDF also warned about the impact of government policies on food prices. They called for a pause in plans to restrict unhealthy food marketing, citing added £2 billion ($2.7 billion) in costs from higher payroll taxes and stricter advertising and packaging rules last year.
