UK Gas Boiler Reliance Sparks Security Concerns
Millions of UK households rely heavily on gas-powered boilers for heating, making them vulnerable to supply disruptions and price volatility. According to a recent report by climate change thinktank E3G, over 25 million British homes are heated by gas boilers, with the majority relying on imported gas.
The report claims that this 'structural reliance' on gas makes the UK susceptible to international chokepoints and physical vulnerabilities in its critical infrastructure. This is evident in the surge of energy inflation following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, which led to a 25% increase in European gas benchmarks and contributed to the UK's peak inflation rate of 11.1% in October 2022.
The experts behind the report recommend that the government launch a 'home front mission' to accelerate the electrification of UK homes and phase out oil and gas for home heating. They also suggest implementing measures to decentralize energy systems and reduce dependence on imported gas.
