UK Gilt Yields Near Historic Peaks Amid Fiscal Pressure

The UK 30-year gilt yield remains close to its historic peak of 5.84%, as indicated by data from September 3, 2026. This comes despite a slight drop in the yield, which slipped to 5.840% at 08:35 BST. The steep curve between the 30-year and two-year yields, with the former positioned 124.6 basis points higher than the latter, serves as an indicator for investors of ongoing fiscal supply and inflation uncertainty.

The current yield on the 10-year gilt also surpassed the July upper-quartile year-end survey projection, standing at 5.2031%. The Bank of England's decision to maintain its benchmark interest rate at 3.75% has contributed to this trend. Analysts predict that the central bank will increase rates in September, with some expecting two hikes by February.

The steep yield curve and high borrowing costs are expected to persist due to ongoing fiscal supply pressures. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) projects gross gilt issuance averaging £268 billion through 2030-31, representing 7.9% of GDP. This will require private investors to purchase gilts amounting to nearly double the annual rate seen from 2000-01 through 2022-23.
