UK Gilt Yields Soar as Inflation Concerns and Middle East Tensions Escalate
The UK's 10-year gilt yield has reached near 19-year highs at 5.2%, as investors anticipate further Bank of England rate hikes due to rising inflation concerns.
Brent crude briefly touched $100 a barrel, while UK natural gas prices climbed to their highest level since late 2022, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and concerns over energy supplies.
Markets are fully pricing in a 25 bp BoE rate increase by December, followed by two further hikes in 2027. However, for the September 17 meeting, policymakers are widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged.
Speaking to lawmakers in Parliament on Tuesday, BoE Governor Andrew Bailey emphasized that the decision would depend on evolving economic and geopolitical developments.
