UK Government Urges BoE to Accelerate Digital Currency Innovation
The UK government is pushing the Bank of England to accelerate its work on digital currency innovation, citing concerns that the central bank's approach may be too cautious for a country trying to stay competitive in global finance.
A 'multi-money ecosystem' is being quietly assembled, where stablecoins, tokenised assets, and a potential digital pound coexist alongside traditional banking rails. The government wants the BoE to pick up the pace on this development.
The UK is building towards a crucial decision: whether to launch a digital pound, with a detailed blueprint and formal assessment expected by the end of 2026. This comes as the European Central Bank advances its own digital euro project, while China's digital yuan is already in widespread domestic use.
Ministers are pushing for more innovation without introducing new risks to financial stability. The BoE has published a consultation draft focused on sterling-denominated stablecoins and issued a Call for Input on market tokenisation, including criteria for stablecoins within the Digital Securities Sandbox.
